Her perfection

Today I made
my cat bloom, the
small pink petal of

her tongue emerging
from the soft sepals of
her mysterious mouth.

Thereby she declared me
sun, though my sole virtue
is a lap, and not always that.

Her virtues are many;
let me name equanimity,
how patiently she abides
my eclipses, my settings.

In a cat’s world are
many suns, each orbiting
her perfection in turn.

We are stars of
lesser and variable
magnitude. Yet tomorrow

she will take
your lap, again
declare you sun.

How, in the face
of such insistence,
could you refuse to shine,

to coax that perfect
petal from her soft
and certain mouth?

  1. cute poem. I now have 4 cats now. When my uncle died, my mother and I have taken over his three cats.

    1. I hope your resident cat adjusted well enough to the three newcomers. That can be a challenge with felines.

    Lesser and variable though we may be, there are beauties for whom we shine unfailingly. 🌟

    1. Holy cats (and I mean that)! If that isn’t worth shining for, I don’t know what is!

  3. Stunning poetry, Cate! This made me think of something . . . you might consider entering this in the Cat Writers’ Communications Contest next year, for work published in 2021. You don’t have to be a member to enter the contest. They have a poetry category or you could enter in a blog post category. If you win a Certificate of Excellence or a Muse Medallion it comes with a lot of prestige. Just an idea. Meows from the kittens and me.

  4. Oh, Cate! Striking – captures catness and the cat-human dynamic “bond” so beautifully.
    I’m currently traveling (missing feline vibes) – your lines here comfort reminding me she easily adjusts to longer stretches uninterrupted & periodic trance interuptions when caregivers arrive to clean her box stroke her belly … patience apparently as prevalent as purrs …

    1. May you soon be in the presence of your feline, Jazz — more for your sake than hers (or his). They are wonderfully adaptable, which non-cat people mistakenly read as aloof. Give me “not obsequious,” anytime.
      🙂 Thanks, as always, for the gift of your attention and reflection.

  5. 😊 That first photo looks just like our newest kitty, Savannah. Seven months old. The great bug hunter and annoyer of her adopted older ‘brother’. 😄

    1. Not my photo, nor my cat. But a beauty. I hope you’re enjoying your newcomer!
