Again today, I can
scarcely bear the
delicate palms of
aspen leaves,
the pleasing golden geometry of
waffle grids cupping
melting butter
and sweet syrup.
Again today, too lovely,
the redolence of cream
laced coffee, the earthiness
of beets steaming
above ruby water,
the warble of courting wrens,
the contagious contentment
of purring cats.
And the tenderness of flannel,
the unruly softness of pearl tapioca.
The innocent curiosity in the eyes of deer.
Again today and all around,
beauty so simple and
profligate, gently tapping
on the door
of my discontent,
as if the world
as if the world
wished to teach me
at last
to bear happiness.
Exquisite! Let’s have some cream laced coffee soon.
