Colorado Springs Police Department and El Paso County Sheriff dispatch recordings from the first minutes of the Nov. 27 shooting have been edited for clarity. Photos of Planned Parenthood and a nearby memorial to three people slain during the five-hour attack — one police officer, two civilians — were taken Nov. 30.

“We have an active shooter.” “All units we have a shooter.” Thank God for those who protect us … who choose and are trained to go towards the shooting and the chaos. Thank you Cate. This is so different

  Thanks for listening. We tend to alternately valorize and demonize police officers in the United States — lately, more the latter. Certainly, there are bad apples, as there are in every profession, and they need to be treated as the criminals they are. But many officers do the best they can under intense provocation in dangerous, dynamic situations. When a suspect dies, they deserve better from us than a rush to judgment before the facts are fully known.
